What to expect in your first session

We're so glad you've taken this step! Your first counselling appointment can definitely be intimidating, anxiety-provoking and nerve-wracking! Our hope is to make your experience as organic and natural as possible. A lot of times people don't know what to expect from their first appointment or have had a negative experience of counselling in the past and this is where that fear can come in.

The primary purpose of our first session together is to gather history, discuss your goals and to determine if we are the right fit for you. We will ask you questions to assess your needs and goals and work collaboratively with you around what your therapy may entail. Each client brings with them their own unique experiences and their own set of inherent strengths. Together we will work towards achieving your goals in order for you to feel more fulfilled and satisfied with your life and relationships.

How will I know if it is a good fit?

Generally speaking, most clients will get a sense of whether or not the therapist is a good fit for them within the first session. Therapists are not one size fits all and it's important that you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist. The client-therapist relationship is the primary therapeutic agent and determinant of successful outcomes in counselling, so it's kind of an important thing!

Here are some questions to ask yourself during and after that first appointment to aid in making this important decision: What is my therapist's general approach and does it align with my values, needs and goals? Do I feel that my therapist is able to help me in achieving those goals? Did I feel safe and comfortable? Did I feel that my therapist could relate with and help with what I am going through right now?
